Il paintball è uno sport nato negli USA all'inizio degli anni ottanta. Lo scopo del gioco è eliminare l'avversario colpendolo con delle palline di gelatina riempite di vernice vivacemente colorata, sparate mediante appositi fucili ad aria compressa chiamati marker. Data la velocità d'impatto (al massimo 300 piedi al secondo, 328 km/h per le competizioni internazionali), la capsula del proiettile si rompe al contatto con l'obiettivo, rilasciando il contenuto sulla tuta dell'avversario. Contrassegnato una volta da un "paintball", un giocatore è eliminato e per rientrare deve attendere un tempo prestabilito o l'inizio della partita successiva.
Emerso all'inizio degli anni ottanta, il paintball è diventato rapidamente popolare, specialmente negli USA ed ha raccolto una folta schiera di partecipanti in tutto il mondo. Contrariamente alle apparenze, se le norme di sicurezza sono rispettate il paintball è uno degli sport più sicuri, avendo una percentuale di incidenti pari a 0,02 per esposizione, di molto inferiore ad altri sport giudicati meno pericolosi, come il calcio.
Fondamentale
per la sicurezza, è l'uso di una maschera protettiva che copra il

Marcatore
Il
marcatore è quell'attrezzo che viene comunemente chiamato "pistola"
o "fucile" e consiste in un lanciatore di capsule
macchianti. Il marcatore per funzionare usa come gas propellente CO2
(anidride carbonica) o semplice aria compressa a 3000 o 4500
psi che nel gergo del paintball viene chiamata HPA (High Pressure
Air). Esistono varie tipologie di marcatori, ma la prima distinzione
può essere fatta tra marcatori meccanici e marcatori elettronici. I
primi, solitamente più robusti e meno esigenti in termini di
manutenzione, sfruttano molle o sistemi meccanici per il rilascio del

Caricatore
Il
caricatore, detto anche loader o hopper è il serbatoio delle
paintballs agganciato sopra il marcatore. Il loader può essere a
gravità o elettronico. Nel primo caso le paintballs scendono nel
marcatore per azione della forza di gravità, nel secondo le
paintballs vengono spinte verso il marcatore grazie a dei motori
elettrici, questo garantisce una maggior costanza di tiro ai marker
elettronici.
Bombola
La
bombola è il serbatoio per il gas propellente ed è solitamente
avvitata dietro al marcatore. Esistono sia bombole per aria compressa
che per CO2, anche se queste ultime sono ormai in disuso.
Le bombole per aria compressa possono essere o in alluminio o in

Abbigliamento
Nel
paintball, in particolar modo nello speedball viene utilizzato un
abbigliamento di gioco specifico, studiato per garantire la massima
libertà e fluidità di movimento, e allo stesso tempo proteggere
alcune parti del corpo più esposte all'impatto con le palline o con
il terreno.
L'abbigliamento è composto da una jersey, realizzata in materiale sintetico, che può avere delle zone imbottite sul gomito, sulle spalle e sul petto; dai pantaloni, anche essi in sintetico, realizzati per resistere alle abrasioni e agli strappi, con zone rinforzate e imbottite sul ginocchio e sui fianchi; infine la bandana, per proteggere la testa dai colpi.
